Homeowner FAQs

What is a home warranty?

A typical home warranty is a service contract for covered breakdowns of major home system components and appliances. It helps reduce the financial risk and headache of fixing home systems and appliances that break down due to normal wear and tear. By paying an annual fee, your home warranty plan will cover the costs of your home repairs and replacements as described in your contract.

However, a home warranty and service plan from OneGuard® takes it a step further. In addition to offering the benefits of a traditional home warranty, we also offer a broad range of home maintenance services which can help free up your time.

What’s the difference between a home warranty and homeowners insurance?

Homeowners insurance is insurance coverage for any unexpected damage to the structure or contents of your home due to events such as fires, storms, and other natural disasters. It may also cover theft of personal property. Homeowners insurance does not cover everyday breakdowns of your home’s systems and appliances due to normal wear and tear.

Home warranties cover most breakdowns of the primary mechanical components in both your home systems (such as HVAC and plumbing) as well as major appliances (such as refrigerators and dishwashers). This is why a home warranty is a great complement to homeowners insurance.

What makes OneGuard’s home warranty plans a great choice?

1. Comprehensive home care coverage: We go beyond a standard home warranty with services like carpet cleaning, window washing, systems tune ups, and more.

2. Fast response: We work hard to resolve your issue quickly.

3. Repairs done right: We always use manufacturer-approved parts, and we’ll use new parts where available. If we can’t fix a covered item, we’ll replace it.

4. Simplify your move: We offer special services tailored to new homeowners such as rekeying, garage remote reprogramming, utility connection, and security systems.

What should I consider when choosing a home warranty company?

1. Read and understand your contract: When comparing home warranty companies, check the limits they set on covered repairs or replacements. We offer few limitations and if we can’t fix a covered item, we’ll replace it.

2. Low priced plans vs. Best value: Extremely low prices are typically a red flag. Home warranty companies that prioritize low priced plans often deny many service requests and use unqualified service contractors.
Although our plans aren’t the cheapest in the industry, our plans offer exceptional value. We carefully select our service contractors and always use manufacturer approved parts. We’ll also use new parts if available.

Although our plans aren’t the cheapest in the industry, we offer the best value. We approve over 95% of claims, carefully select our contractors, perform high quality work, and use new, manufacturer-approved parts.

3. Selection of services: Most home warranties only provide service for breakdowns of covered appliances and system components. But we go beyond traditional home warranties by offering pest control, window cleaning, system tune-ups, and much more.

4. Reliable ratings: When looking for a reliable home warranty company, we recommend using trustworthy review sites such as Angie’s List, Google+, and ConsumerAffairs. These sites aren’t influenced by the companies being rated, so you’ll get real customer feedback.

What’s NOT covered by a home warranty?

A home warranty and service plan provides repair or replacement of covered items that break down because of normal wear and tear during the warranty contract period. Therefore, any appliance and/or system components that are broken because of improper use and care, or were malfunctioning prior to contract coverage becoming effective, will not be covered. In addition, non-mechanical parts or components that don’t contribute to the primary function of the covered system or appliance are not covered.

What’s NOT covered by a home warranty?

A home warranty and service plan provides repair or replacement of covered items that break down because of normal wear and tear during the warranty contract period. Meaning, if a home buyer’s appliance and/or system needs a repair because of improper use and care, it will not be covered. Additionally, non-mechanical parts or components that don’t contribute to the primary function of the covered system or appliance will not be covered.

Does a OneGuard Home Warranty and Service Plan cover pre-existing conditions?

OneGuard real estate home warranty and service plans (Sentinel, Centurion, and Guardian), include a no-fault coverage, also known as Unknown Pre-Existing Conditions coverage. This means that unknown problems that would be undetectable by a visual inspection or simple mechanical test will be covered.

Can home buyers add coverage after the policy has started?

Yes, home buyers have 30 days after closing to add additional coverage if the systems or appliances are in good working order. Call our customer care line at 888.896.0014 to learn more.

What is seller’s coverage?

If the seller purchases a one-year OneGuard home warranty and service plan for the buyer of the home, the seller will receive home warranty coverage during the listing period. The seller’s coverage begins on the date the policy is active and lasts up to 6 months while the home is actively on the market. In addition, the buyer will receive twelve months of coverage beginning the day of closing.

Payment is not due until closing. The contract fee is then paid out from the proceeds of the sale of your home. If the seller has a covered failure during the listing period, the seller will simply pay the nominal service fee for the repair.

Seller’s coverage is currently only available in Arizona and Texas. In Texas, if the seller has a claim during the listing period, the seller pays $200 of the premium at the time of the claim. This $200 payment will then be deducted from the premium and the net remaining premium amount will be due at close of escrow.

How does the Certified Pre-Owned Home program differ from seller’s coverage?

With the Certified Pre-Owned Home program, the home seller will receive seller’s coverage during the listing period, plus some additional benefits. The Certified Pre-Owned Home program also includes a mechanical inspection, which works to identify seller-warranted items that need to be fixed early on.

The seller is responsible for repairs before the certification goes into effect. This is important because broken items can be repaired or replaced prior to listing the home—avoiding the hassle of negotiating costly repairs with potential buyers.

The seller also benefits from the warranty’s Unknown Pre-existing Conditions Coverage during the listing period. This means that unknown problems that would be undetectable by a visual inspection or simple mechanical test will be covered. Finally, the Certified Pre-Owned Home program comes with marketing materials, such as, a sign rider, tent cards, certificate of compliance, and a mechanical inspection report.

Certified Pre-Owned Home Program is offered in Phoenix, Arizona; San Antonio, Texas; and Las Vegas, Nevada.
